Technology and Products

Supporting European and Canadian industry, from SMEs to industrial consortia, to push the boundaries of innovation in satellite communications.

Through our Technology and Products programme, which forms part of ESA’s Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme, we aim to maintain and improve the capabilities and competitiveness of European and Canadian industry within the satellite communications market – and through the development of innovative technology and services.

Technology and Products – which is comprised of the ESA-initiated Advanced Technology and Industry initiated Competitiveness and Growth – is your partner for creating tomorrow’s satellite communications solutions. It supports activities that are rooted in any point of the technology development process from initial idea to a fully-fledged product system or service.

The programme provides the funding, multidisciplinary expertise, business knowledge, opportunities for small and medium enterprises, international consortium and contacts needed to turn the concept into reality.

Market Fit

The satellite communications market is experiencing a deep, disruptive, and extremely fast transformation. The public sector in Europe can play a vital role, taking on greater risk and increasing its investment to support European industry regain competitiveness in the global market and, therefore, remain viable.

Regaining competitiveness in Europe requires investing in development of enabling technologies and system concepts and reaching a level of industrial maturity in European and Canadian solutions that is ready to address future connectivity needs, services and applications.

Under the industrial competitiveness programme line, Technology and Products focuses on strategic themes and key market growth differentiators, which includes:

10.3%

The amount Europe’s satellite communications market is expected to grow by 2030.

60%

The revenue percentage (5 billion Euros) that stems from the European space industry and through manufacture and launch of communications satellites.

To sustain the competitiveness of our Member States, ESA is focusing on several key topics:
